What custom earplugs are.
Custom earplugs are made from an impression of your own ears, so each plug is shaped to your unique ear canal and outer ear. Because they are molded to you, they tend to seal more consistently and stay comfortable for longer wear than one-size-fits-all options. Depending on your needs, they can be made for music, sleep, work, water, and general noise reduction.
How custom-molded plugs differ from over-the-counter.
Shaped to your ears
Foam and silicone plugs rely on a generic shape. A molded plug follows the contours of your ear canal, which can improve comfort and how well it seals.
More even reduction
Many disposable plugs muffle high pitches more than low ones. Filtered custom plugs are designed to lower volume more evenly so speech and music stay clearer.
Reusable and durable
Custom plugs are made to be cleaned and reused, rather than discarded after a few uses, which many people find more practical over time.
Made for how you use them.
Musician earplugs
Filtered earplugs for rehearsals, performances, and practice, designed to reduce volume while keeping sound clear and natural. Filter options let you choose how much reduction you need.
Concert & live-music earplugs
Protection for concerts, clubs, and venues, intended to help you enjoy the show while reducing exposure to loud sound.
Sleep plugs
Soft custom plugs molded for side sleeping, made to help reduce noise from a partner, traffic, or other nighttime sound.
Occupational & recreational protection
Hearing protection for work environments, shooting sports, motorsports, lawn care, and other loud activities, with options suited to the setting.
Swim & water protection
When clinically appropriate, custom plugs can be made to help keep water out of the ears for swimming and other water activities. We will discuss whether they are a good fit for you.
How the fitting works.
Ear impression
After a look in your ears, we take a soft impression of the ear canal and outer ear. The impression is quick and is the basis for a plug shaped to you.
Lab fabrication
Your impression and chosen options are sent to a lab that fabricates the earplugs. This step takes place after your appointment, and the finished plugs are ready at a later date.
Fitting
When your earplugs return, we check the fit and comfort and make adjustments as needed so they seal properly and feel right.
Counseling
We show you how to insert, remove, clean, and store your earplugs, and answer questions so you get the most out of them.
Materials & filter options.
Soft and firm options
Custom plugs can be made in softer or firmer materials depending on comfort preferences and how you plan to use them. We review the choices with you.
Selectable filters
For music and live-sound use, different filters offer different amounts of reduction, so you can match the plug to your environment.
Color and style
Many custom plugs come in a range of colors and finishes. We will go over the available options during your visit.
When to schedule.
It helps to plan ahead, since custom earplugs are fabricated at a lab after your impression appointment rather than made the same day. If you have a tour, a season of shows, a new job in a loud environment, or ongoing trouble sleeping through noise, scheduling early gives time for the plugs to be made and fit before you need them. If you are unsure which type is right for you, we can talk through your goals at the consultation.
Custom earplug questions.
We take a soft impression of your ear canal and outer ear, then send it to a lab that fabricates earplugs shaped to your anatomy. Once they return, we check the fit and make any adjustments needed for comfort and a proper seal.
The impression and consultation appointment usually takes about 30 to 45 minutes. The finished earplugs are typically ready at a later date, and we set aside time to verify the fit when you return.
Cost depends on the type of earplug, the filter or attenuation options you choose, and the material. We review the options and provide pricing during your consultation so you can decide what fits your needs.
Musician earplugs use filters designed to lower volume more evenly across pitches, so sound stays clearer and more natural. Many over-the-counter plugs reduce high pitches more than low ones, which can make music sound muffled.
